‘What is mine, is yours, what is yours is mine, including your man sis.’
In 2019 the concept of sister-wives is no longer taboo, as you may remember the American reality show ‘Sister Wives’ that launched in 2010 on TLC about one man who had four sister-wives and 18 children.
The show became a hit and although people bashed the family on social media, the concept is now widely accepted by many.
Meet Owami and Olwethu Siko, the twins from Vosloorus who were once married to the same man, TV director Mzukiseni Mzazi when they were 21 years old. Fast forward to 2019, the 29-year-old women have divorced the man. Reaching new heights, they are now single and living life under different conditions
There have been mixed reactions to the divorce, with the community who were against the idea from the beginning, still being unsupportive.
The twins’ grandmother, 70, who lives in Vosloorus where the ladies grew up, was relieved about the divorce as she did not want her granddaughters to be in a miserable marriage.
Owami and Olwethu were married for 9 years and made the decision to get divorced after realising they had remained in the marriage because of their children – both 7 year-old girls from each sister, with their ex-husband. The divorce was a joint decision and they both wanted to get out of the marriage.
In five years, the ladies see themselves as successful entrepreneurs who will both walk down the aisle in their white wedding gowns, since they only had a traditional wedding for their previous marriage.
And there will only be one groom on that day as they share everything and will continue to do so, even in their future marriage.
Although independent and single, they aren’t on any dating sites and don’t go on dates. Describing themselves as “one soul”, they are not looking to date other twins and should they find a man who is only interested in one of them, they would decline the offer because, “You either take both of us or neither”.
However, should they find their ideal man, he would have to pay Lobola for both of them because although they are one soul, they are two individuals and their polygamy is unique as there is no first or second wife – they are equal wives.
Having been part of a traditional church and attending the Zulu reed dance before their previous marriage, the twins had never been in a relationship.
Their ex-husband is the first man they had ever been with intimately.
The ladies are now undergoing counseling once a week and looking for a fresh start since they have never worked before.
With a long list of goals they would like to achieve now that their independent, the ladies are doing a campaign where they encourage young women from harsh backgrounds not to marry for the wrong reasons such getting into the entertainment industry.
Included on their goals for the New Year is releasing their first book titled – Two Bodies, One Soul, which will tell their story and journey thus far.
They have pitched a reality show that will document their independent lives to production companies, however are still awaiting an official response.
For now the ladies are hosting motivational events, empowering women across the country and hosting fitness events since it was the one thing that got them through the toxic marriage.
