Taxi and Trotro Drivers can operate at full capacity – Akufo-Addo

Commercial vehicles can resume operations at full capacity, as President Nana Akufo-Addo lifts restrictions on transport activities.

The decision, according to Akufo-Addo, was taken after consultations with the Ministers for Transport and Aviation and the leadership of transport unions.

Airplanes, taxis, trotros and buses can resume regular operations, Akufo-Addo said in his 14th televised address to the nation on his administration’s management of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The wearing of masks in vehicles and aircrafts, and the maintenance of enhanced hygiene protocols, remain mandatory,” he stressed.

The commercial vehicle operators were asked to reduce the number of passengers they carry in March after consultations with their unions.

The decision was geared toward ensuring social distancing protocols in public transport in a bid to control the spread of the virus.

Transport fares

Transport fare were later increased to help mitigate the loss of transport operators.

Deputy Transport Minister, Titus Glover in an interview with Adom News’ Abednego Asante Asiedu said government took the decision in acknowledgment of the impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had on drivers.

The president did not state whether the fares would go back down after reversal of the capacity directive.
