The Techiman Bouyem Benkumhene and conveyor of the Keep Techiman Clean Campaign, Nana Ameyaw Antwi Boasiako II, has called on the Techiman Traditional Council to take a firmer stance in support of the city’s ongoing sanitation drive.
This call comes as the campaign, despite achieving notable progress, continues to face disturbing acts of environmental indiscipline.
The Keep Techiman Clean Campaign, launched four years ago under Nana Ameyaw Antwi Boasiako II’s leadership, has grown from a public awareness initiative into a vigorous on-the-ground operation involving community engagement, the enforcement of sanitation by-laws, and continuous monitoring.
In an interview with the media, Nana Antwi Boasiako II revealed that despite the positive gains made by the campaign, it still faces challenges due to certain unacceptable behaviors. According to him, one of the major hurdles comes from certain drivers at the Techiman lorry station.
“Some unacceptable behaviors persist, for instance, individuals urinating into bottles and hiding them under vehicles. In response, we have intensified public education, installed dustbins at strategic locations, and intervene directly when people are seen littering.
“Regrettably, some drivers undermine our efforts. Though they sweep their areas, they sometimes dump the waste under their vehicles instead of using the provided bins. When confronted, they claim that having paid their station fees, they are entitled to act as they please.” He stated.
He appealed to the Techiman Traditional Council to take a more assertive role in addressing such attitudes, and urged the traditional leadership to set the tone for change across all levels of society.
Nana Ameyaw Antwi Boasiako II also urged schools to take up the mantle of environmental education and reminded the general public of their individual responsibility in keeping the city clean.
“We urge the Techiman Traditional Council to take a stronger stance on these issues and encourage educators in our schools to instill environmental consciousness in students.
“Everyone has a role to play. When we purchase items on our way home, to school, church, mosque, or work, we must dispose of plastic waste properly. If no bin is available, we should carry the waste with us until we find a suitable disposal point.” He said
