The Principal of Techiman Krobo Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Prof. Frederick Anaba, has shared his inspiring professional journey while celebrating the remarkable academic transformation of the college under his leadership.
In an exclusive interview with our reporter following the college’s recent national recognition, Prof. Anaba reflected on both his personal and professional growth and the tremendous progress Techiman Krobo Nursing College has made in recent years.
The college was recently adjudged the Best Institution with the Highest Number of Distinctions (70) and 100% pass rate in the 2024 Diploma Terminal Examination. A student from the college was also honored as the Overall Best Student, further cementing the institution’s reputation for academic excellence.
“I began my training at Bolgatanga Nursing Training College. After completing my studies there, I moved to the Sunyani Regional Hospital, now a Teaching Hospital. At the Teaching Hospital, I worked in various departments, spending most of my time in the theatre. Later, I became the Ward-in-Charge of the Chest Ward, which is the Tuberculosis (TB) unit.” He said.
He further disclosed that his educational path saw him earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Ghana, Legon, followed by a Master’s in Public Health from KNUST before enrolling in law school.
“After working in the TB unit, I left to pursue further education. First, I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Ghana, Legon. I then proceeded to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to pursue a Master’s degree in Public Health. Following that, I enrolled in law school.” He stated.
Prof. Anaba was appointed Vice Principal of Krobo Nursing and Midwifery Training College in 2018 and assumed the role of Principal in 2022. According to him, at the time of his appointment, the college’s academic performance was alarmingly low, with the Registered General Nurse (RGN) program recording a pass rate of just 30%–32%, while the Certificate program hovered between 40% and 45%.
He however disclosed that through targeted interventions and reforms, He successfully elevated the college’s performance, with the Registered General Nurse pass rate rising to 60% in his first year. The subsequent year saw a remarkable 98% pass rate across both RGN and Certificate programs.
“In the latter part of 2018, I was transferred to Krobo Nursing and Midwifery Training College as the Vice Principal. In 2022, I was appointed Principal of the College. While working under Mr. Deawuo, I gained a deep understanding of the challenges facing the institution, including infrastructure issues, students’ academic and personal struggles, and classroom limitations.
“When I took over as Principal, I did not hesitate to act. At the time, the academic performance of Krobo Nursing Training College was very poor. The Registered General Nurse (RGN) program had a pass rate of around 30% to 32%, while the Certificate program ranged between 40% and 45%. He said.
Prof. Frederick Anaba continued “IN my first year as Principal, I was able to improve the RGN pass rate to about 60%, and the Certificate program also rose to 60%. The following year, both programs achieved outstanding results, 98% pass rates. The subsequent year saw a slight drop, with the RGN program achieving 65%, the Nurse Assistant Preventive (NAP) program around 70%, and the Certificate program reaching 98.8% in the Nursing and Midwifery Council License Examination.
“In the KNUST Nursing and Midwifery Examinations, we achieved an exceptional result of 70 distinctions and a 100% pass rate.”
