Techiman North Assembly dredges Tuobodom Subin River to improve water flow

The Techiman North District Assembly, with support from the Office of the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry and Member of Parliament for Techiman North, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has successfully dredged the Tuobodom Subin River to enhance water flow and reduce flooding in the area.

Speaking to the media, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Adom Kwabena Johnson, explained that the intervention followed several reports from residents about the challenges caused by the stagnant river. According to him, the problem was not unique to Tuobodom, as a similar situation had been recorded at the Aworano Tano River.

“We had two similar issues in the district, one at the Aworano Tano River and the other at the Tuobodom Subin River. Residents of these two communities informed the District Assembly about their challenges, and I, in turn, informed our Member of Parliament, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare.”

Hon. Johnson further noted that after Hon. Ofosu-Adjare engaged the appropriate authorities, the Tano River at Aworano was dredged and is now flowing freely. He added that work on the Subin River is near completion and will soon restore its natural flow, easing movement for residents.

“Hon. Elizabeth also reported the issue to the appropriate authorities, and as a result, the Tano River at Aworano has been dredged and is now flowing freely. Work has also started on dredging the Tuobodom Subin River, which has now begun to flow as well.

“Before this exercise, the river was stagnant and posed many challenges to residents. Whenever it rained, it became difficult for people, especially farmers, to use the bridge. Moreover, the Subin River serves as a water source for residents of Tanoboase and nearby communities who rely on it for farming and household activities. Since the river was choked, residents found it difficult to get water for their daily needs.” He said.

Hon. Adom Kwabena Johnson further disclosed that engineers will revisit the site to continue work on choked culverts and ensure free water flow. The Assembly is also holding discussions on improving the condition of the bridge to prevent future blockages.

“We are grateful to our Member of Parliament for the good work done. The main dredging work has been completed, and engineers are expected to visit the site again to continue the process and work on the choked culverts to ensure the free flow of the river. I also have a meeting with the engineers today, and I am hopeful that we will discuss the state of the bridge and find ways to improve it.”

As part of sustainability measures, the Techiman North District Assembly National Disaster Management Organisation Cordinator, Mr. Adamu Muhammed, in interview with our reporter stated that the Assembly has formed a Disaster Volunteer Group (DVG) to serve as community watchdogs to enforce sanitation by-laws and discourage residents from dumping refuse into gutters and rivers.

“We have formed a Disaster Volunteer Group (DVG) to serve as community watchdogs to ensure that residents obey sanitation by-laws and keep the environment clean. We have realized that many people dump refuse into gutters and rivers, which contributes to blockages. The DVG will make sure such practices stop, and anyone found culpable will be punished according to the community’s by-laws.” He told our reporter.

The Assembly Member for the Abromamu Electoral Area in Tuobodom, Hon. Osei Yaw Antony, also expressed his profound appreciation to Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare and Hon. Adom Kwabena Johnson for their intervention and admonished residents to desist from dumping refuse into the Subin River.

“We first raised concerns about the condition of the Subin River and its effect on our lives during our General Assembly meeting, and we are grateful to our District Chief Executive, Hon. Adom Kwabena Johnson, and our Member of Parliament, who also serves as the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, for treating the matter with urgency.

“I advise residents to stop dumping refuse into the river because that is what caused the blockage in the first place. Now that the District Assembly, with support from our Member of Parliament, has dredged the river, we must make sure it remains clean and flowing.

Some residents expressed their appreciation for the swift intervention, stating that the dredging has brought great relief to the community.

“My name is Elder Osei Kwaku, and I am pleased with the work done so far at the Subin River. However, I appeal to the District Assembly to improve the state of the bridge; otherwise, if it rains heavily, the sand may wash back into the river and block it again.”

Another said, “As a resident of this community, I must say that I am very impressed with the efforts of the Assembly. We faced many challenges because of the river’s blockage, but now that it has been dredged, movement between our community and nearby areas has become much easier.”
