Techiman South: MCE vows to tackle drug abuse among youth to curb crime

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Techiman South, Hon. Kwaku Adjei Mensah, has pledged a firm commitment to combat the growing abuse of illicit drugs among the youth in the municipality.

According to him, the fight against crime cannot be won without addressing its root cause, which he identified as drug abuse among the youth.

Hon. Adjei-Mensah revealed that the municipality has witnessed a disturbing increase in violent crimes, including recent cases of murder in Traa and Kuntunso. He expressed concern that these incidents are often perpetrated by individuals under the influence of hard drugs.

“What I know is that crime can only be fully curtailed in our municipality if we make a conscious and collective effort to combat the abuse of illicit drugs among the youth.

“These crimes are being committed by people we live with in our communities, and thorough investigations may reveal that they were under the influence of illicit drugs.” He said.

The Techiman South Municipal Chief Executive appealed to religious leaders in the municipality and across the country to play a more active role in guiding the youth within their congregations and educating them about the dangers of illicit drug use. He warned that today’s drug users could become tomorrow’s armed robbers, posing a serious threat to entire communities.

“As Christians, we have a responsibility to instill morality in our youth. I humbly appeal to our religious leaders to dedicate quality time to educating young people about the dangers of drug abuse. Under the influence of drugs, they lose their sense of conscience and can harm or even kill without hesitation.” He disclosed.

He further revealed  that the Techiman Police Command, in collaboration with his office, will soon launch a series of targeted operations to clamp down on drug users and dealers in the area.

“In my administration, I will do everything within my power to curb drug abuse. This will be a significant step toward reducing crime in the municipality.” He said

The MCE also called on parents and guardians to monitor the movements and friendships of their daughters, noting that vulnerable young girls are especially at risk of falling into destructive behavior.

“We must take an active interest in where our girls spend their time and the kind of friends they associate with. If we neglect this, we risk losing them to bad influences.” He stated
