The Asamoah Gyan Foundation has activated a hunt for raw and upcoming tennis stars in the Ghanaian capital Accra.
The leading African World Cup scorer with six goals over three World Cup Finals, is renowned in his native Ghana for pushing for the development and promotion of other sports other than football.
The launch of the tennis talent hunt is in collaboration with other partners and sponsors including iMax Media (Max FM/TV) G-Unit Tennis Club, Babolat Tennis and TECNO Mobile.
Other sponsors include IPMC, Kanzo Restaurant, Nii Plant Logistics, Royal Senchi and Cheezzy Pizza.
The 37 Military Officers Mess Tennis courts would host the tournament from Monday 5th to Saturday 10th October 2020.
Fondly called “Baby Jet” by his adoring fans in Ghana and beyond, Gyan spoke about his passion for tennis and why he is determined to help drive the promotion of his “second love”.
” I want to invite you all to come and witness impeccable display of tennis skills from young boys and girls as well as the Men’s Professional and Ladies Professional categories”.
The Black Stars striker who has not yet retired from international or club football was quick to state that the mini tournament is being organized with full Covid-19 protocols.
“Let’s fight Covid-19 by obeying the rules of engagement in sports and keeping fit. Tennis is one of the best sports to do that so we must do the right thing and educate ourselves”.
Tournament Director George Henry Arthur Heckson told Sport Daily that there would also be a category for senior tennis club and social players.
” I can confirm that the Asamoah Gyan Foundation has lined up some players who will be participating from the Ghana tennis fraternity like Johnson Acquah, Bernard Armaah and Yvonne Bruce-Tagoe”.
He revealed that there would a few guest participants from West Africa to boost the level of competition.
Other Ghanaians scheduled to feature are Desmond Ayaba, Mariama Ibrahim and Yakubu Abubakar .
Fresh and emerging tennis talents would be harnessed for further development by the Asamoah Gyan Foundation.
