Three suspected Burkinabés arrested in Navrongo with Ghana Cards

Three men suspected to be nationals of neighbouring Burkina Faso have been detained at the Navrongo Police station for the possession of Ghana Cards.

The suspects, two of whose identities have been given as Iddrisu Zeydane and Muhadeen Ismail, were seized by a local on Saturday at the Doba Primary School, one of the centres for the National Identification Authority (NIA) Ghana Card registration exercise in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality, and handed to the Police.

According to details, the suspects came from the regional capital Bolgatanga, where they were hiding in an uncompleted hotel facility, to collect their Ghana Cards after an earlier successful registration. But luck eluded them as community members who became suspicious and keenly monitored their movement exposed them.

After it became obvious, they were non-Ghanaians, one of the locals managed to trick the suspects into a vehicle and drove them to the Police station before they could abscond.

A Police search retrieved Ghana Cards from two of the suspects. The third suspect, however, was not in possession of a card as his was not ready for collection at the centre.

Prosper Adongo, the local who aided their arrest told GhanaWeb’s Upper East Regional Correspondent, Senyalah Castro, that he was informed by someone who saw them joining the queue at the centre to register for the Ghana card days earlier.

He said following the tip-off, he began tracking their movement which led to their apprehension right after making claim of their cards.

He recounted: “they even came and did the registration some days ago and left. But some people saw them. So, when I got the information that they had come again, I quickly rushed to Doba and started tracking them. I tracked them from the NIA registration centre which is the Doba Primary school where they came to pick their cards. They were able to pick two cards. For the other guy, he said his card will be ready on Monday. So, I got close to them and interrogated them and later gave them a lift in my car to Bolgatanga. But along the way, I told them I had forgotten something in Navrongo and needed to pick it up. But I quickly drove straight to the Police station and handed them to the police.”

Mr. Adongo added his interrogation revealed that the uncompleted hotel facility the suspects confessed to staying in belonged to Adams Mahama, the late Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

When GhanaWeb visited the Navrongo Police station, statements were being taken from the suspects.

The local authority of the National Identification Authority could not be contacted to comment on the matter.
