The Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry and Member of Parliament for Techiman North, Hon. Lawyer Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has commissioned 350 Trading Standards Inspectors (TSIs) under the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA).
The commissioning ceremony which took place at the GS head office in Shiashie, Accra on Friday, May 30, 2025, is part of efforts by government to strengthening fair trade practices and enhancing consumer protection.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in the implementation of the Ghana Standards Authority Act, 2022 (Act 1078), and reinforces the government’s commitment to building a fair, transparent, and standards-driven trade environment across the nation.
Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, speaking at the ceremony, disclosed that the newly commissioned inspectors will be deployed nationwide and tasked with critical responsibilities. These include verifying fuel pumps, market scales, and electricity meters; inspecting goods at ports; and calibrating medical equipment in hospitals. She said these measures are expected to ensure accuracy in measurements, uphold product quality, and protect both consumers and businesses
“These inspectors will be deployed nationwide to enforce the Ghana Standards Authority Act, 2022 (Act 1078). Their responsibilities encompass verifying the accuracy of fuel pumps, market scales, and electricity meters; inspecting goods at ports; and calibrating hospital equipment. Such measures are vital for maintaining quality control, ensuring precise measurements, and fostering economic growth.
“This commissioning is part of the government’s broader strategy to institutionalize fairness in trade by replacing non-standard measurements with certified systems. Through these efforts, we aim to protect farmers and traders, support the implementation of the President’s 24-hour economy strategy, and build a resilient, export-ready, standards-based economy.” She stated
According to her, the deployment of the TSIs also aligns with the government’s broader economic vision, including the operationalization of the President’s 24-hour economy strategy. She further stated that, with a renewed focus on precision, accountability, and compliance with standards, the initiative is poised to play a key role in enhancing public trust and boosting efficiency across Ghana’s domestic trade and industry sectors.
“I am confident that these inspectors will play a transformative role in enhancing our trade environment, ensuring safety, fairness, and confidence within Ghana’s domestic trade and industry landscape.” She said.
