The Minister-designate of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has hinted that a legislation will soon be passed to make unblocking of imported mobile phones impossible.
She indicated that there will be a central mobile phones identity register “and so if your phone is stolen from outside and sold here, it cannot be used here”.
“If it’s blocked there, it is blocked here.”
The Ablekuma West Member of Parliament made this known on Monday, February 15 during her vetting to continue her role as the Minister of Communications.
She said government will soon undertake a SIM registration exercise across the country to have all SIM cards registered.
“It is imperative that we register our SIM cards,” she advised.
“It is imperative that we register our devices. We are working with the industry to get that done.
“So, we will notify the public when the arrangements are ready. We hope that everybody will take advantage of this new opportunity to secure our devices.”
She said a grace period will be given, after which all unregistered SIMs will be blocked.
