VIDEO: Kayaye runaway from Accra over CONVID-19 lock down

Many female head porters generally called Kayayei have trooped major lorry stations in Accra with their belongings in an attempt to run away to other cities to avoid the lock down.

Photos and videos tendered in on Saturday evening by reporters on from the Mallam Atta market, Neoplan station in Circle, and the major markets in Accra showed hundreds of Kayayei packing their belongings to leave the capital city.

Others were seen queuing at lorry stations awaiting to board a bus to other cities and towns.

The president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Friday announced a partial lock down on four major cities in Ghana which are Accra, Kasoa, Tema and Kumasi in an attempt to avert the further spread of COVID-19 in Ghana.

His directives which were much anticipated and pushed through by many Non-Governmental Organizations  (NGOs), civic organizations, media personnels and think tanks meant that no one could leave the city to another city or town from Monday.

Intercity movement of vehicles from a locked down city to another city or town would be prohibited.

Speaking to one of the head potters, Fuseina Abubakar, she lamented that even though the president has pleaded with the citizenry not to move out of their current abode into other areas, they as head potters make income on a daily basis to fend for themselves and their children. Staying at home for two weeks is a thing they cannot afford to do because they would die of hunger.

“As for us Kayayei I don’t think we can abide by the directive of the president because we make money on a daily basis to take care of ourselves and so we can’t stay in doors for two weeks.  We will die of hunger.  Some of us don’t even have a place to sleep so we have to quickly move to other big towns and cities that have not been locked down so that we can work to get our daily bread,” she said.

Ghana’s confirmed Coronavirus cases as of Saturday, 28th March, 2020 stands at 141 with 5 deaths and 2 recoveries.
