The Real Madrid’s standout player Vini Jr. showcases talent on the field but also represents a much larger fight off it. In a press conference, the striker became emotional talking about the racism he has faced while playing for the Merengue team and his role as a leader in the cause. ‘I’m getting sadder every time, I have less desire to play. But I will keep fighting,’ said the 23-year-old striker before adding: ‘For all the people who cheer for me, follow me, and send me messages to fight with them.

I have a great strength inside me, in my family, at home. Not everyone has the support I have at home. Who can speak for so many people. I want to play football, continue for them, who know what I really go through and have gone through. And it’s very difficult,’ he concluded. The striker has been a victim of insults and racial discrimination on more than one occasion wearing the Real Madrid shirt. In February, La Liga even reported another case of racism against the player in a match against Getafe and sent it to the Anti-Violence Commission of the Spanish federation.

However, the impunity due to the act not being considered racism in Spain bothers the player. ‘Lack of punishments. If we start punishing all the people who commit crimes, and here they do not consider it a crime, we will evolve and it will be better for everyone. I make many reports, letters arrive for me to sign. In the end, it happens like what happened with my friend in Barcelona, they shelve the process and know nothing,’ he said. ‘If we punish, they will not change their thinking, but they will be afraid to speak and we will reduce this and instill fear in those people. Who can educate their children. There are children insulting me and I do not blame them, I also did not understand racism at that age. And that is very complicated,’ he explained. ‘In football there are many people and players better than me who have passed through here. I want people to evolve, improve, and that we can have equality in the near future.

Fewer cases of racism and black people living a normal life like everyone else. I fight for this. If it were up to me, I would have given up and no one would insult me at home. I go to the game focused on the game, it is not always possible to do the best for my team. So, I need to concentrate a lot every day. I just want to play football and do the best for my family,’ he concluded.
