The games between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Black Stars are always cagey and unpredictable. The two teams who are considered some of the best in the continent will go at each other again for only one slot in Qatar.
They have played each other 56 times. Nigeria has only won 12 of those encounters. 19 have ended in stalemates while the Black Stars have won 25 of those games.
The most recent meeting between the two sides was at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi where the Super Eagles were held to a goalless draw. The game was one of the best outings from the Black Stars. The young side played well above themselves to hold a star-studded Super Eagles team who lacked confidence in most parts of the game.
The Super Eagles can rewrite their story when they host Ghana in Abuja and the only reason Nigerians believe this is to relive the memories of 2021.
Just like in the situation the Super Eagles find themselves, they were paired in the same group with the Black Stars ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Korea and Japan.
A tensed atmosphere, subtle jabs thrown between fans, player comparison and hostilities just to mention a few characterized the games, especially the first leg in Accra, a fan who was at the stadium in 2001 said in a WhatsApp chat.
Despite all, the Super Eagles qualified for the tournament after the return leg in the Liberation Stadium – Port Harcourt ended three goals to nil. Two goals from Tijani Babangida and another from Victor Ighali cemented Nigeria’s place in the tournament.
The first leg staged at the Accra Sports Stadium ended 0-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The team was handled by the late Amodu Shaibu at the time.
