Water crisis in Sekondi-Takoradi soars

Several residents in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis are yet to see water run through their pipes despite the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) rationing exercise.

This the GWCL said was as a result of reduced pumping hours at the treatment plant at Daboase occasioned by raw water unavailability.

“The company understands what cherished customers have been going through and wished to empathise with them while it does everything humanly possible to keep the plant in operation,” Nana Yaw Barima Barnie, Western Regional Communications Manager of GWCL, said.

A visit to the dam sites by the GNA showed that the situation was dire as the Region was currently confronted with some challenges with respect to water supply arising from raw water unavailability.

The difficulty, the GNA noted, stemmed from inadequate freshwater inflows into the Pra basin, which serves as the raw water source for the Daboase Water Treatment Plant, the biggest plant in the Region.

The Anankware River, which is the source of raw water for the Inchaban Water Treatment Plant, has also not been spared the poor inflow of fresh water.

Nana Barnie told the GNA that illegal mining activities upstream of the River Pra  had also contributed to the challenge as there was severe siltation at the plant’s intake at Daboase.

“This high silt deposit has significantly reduced the volume of raw water available for abstraction in the pump. The current dry season has also compounded the problem of raw water unavailability,” he stated.

The effect of the development, he said, was that the plant had not been able to abstract adequate quantities of raw water for treatment and distribution.

“Currently, the river level is 0.8m at which point the plant should have been shut down, but we are managing the situation in order not to cause severe water crisis in the metropolis,”  Nana Barnie stated.

He said the GWCL had no choice than to commence the seasonal rationing of water in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.

He called on residents of the Metropolis to store water when available.
