A lady who only gave her name as Gladys has narrated how a policeman raped her as a precondition to helping her bail out her husband.
Gladys who hails from the Northern part of Ghana said she travelled to Nkwanta in the Oti Region upon hearing that her husband was in detention.
She recounted asking a policeman for accommodation within the police barracks, knowing that she would be safe since there was no better place for safety than a police station.
“In my mind, I knew I would be safer in a police station so I asked the police officer for a place to lay my head so I can follow the case the next morning, and indeed he provided me with one,” she said on Nhyira FM’s Obra show.
Gladys said the police officer sneaked into her room late in the night and forcefully had canal knowledge of her.
“He came to my room when I was still awake, lifted me from the plastic chair I was sitting on and tore my dress. He raped me countless times; all night long until I became weak. I cried my eyes out after the ordeal,” Gladys narrated amidst tears.
According to Gladys, the police officer in question told her not to attempt screaming because the barracks was one filled with his subordinates who will not believe her if she accused him of anything.
Gladys explained that she failed to report the officer to the authorities because he threatened to worsen her husband’s case if she did any such thing.
The police officer who reacted to the allegations on the same show admitted to having canal knowledge of the woman but said the act was consensual and not rape as Gladys was making it seem.
He added that the victim told him the detainee was merely her boyfriend, the reason he agreed to sleep with her in exchange for his freedom.
Gladys’ husband of 20 years, Kwabena, is, however, supportive of his wife, saying he believes his wife will never have extramarital affairs.
