Youth in Afforestation demo: One arrested

A beneficiary of the Youth in Afforestation Programme, Joseph Atakora has been arrested by the police for unlawful possession of a handcuff as the group gathered at the Kumasi Jubilee Park to demonstrate.

Mr Atakora was arrested by the Manhyia Police command at the converging point on Wednesday, 7 August 2019.

Mr Kofi Fred, Secretary for the Youth in Afforestation Beneficiaries told Kumasi FM’s Elisha Adarkwah that though the suspect showed documents giving him the right to possess the handcuff as a forest guard, the police arrested him anyway.

Mr Fred condemned what he described as intimidation by the police to prevent them from protesting against ill-treatment by the government.

The beneficiaries converged at the Kumasi Jubilee Park to demonstrate against the government over their four months unpaid stipends.

They wore red armbands and headgears to express their displeasure about the posture of government towards their concerns.
