Black Stars assistant coach explains World Cup plans for Asamoah Gyan

Black Stars assistant coach George Boateng has explained the plans the coaches of the Black Stars have for Asamoah Gyan ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The former Aston Villa U-23s boss disclosed the coaches will speak with the Ghana all-time top scorer before revealing the plans they have for him.

Gyan told the BBC earlier last month of his ambition to play at the 2022 World Cup, but people have questioned how fit he is to be selected by Ghana for the tournament.

“Out of respect for the player [Gyan] and a friend of mine as a person, I will prefer to discuss this issue with him in person, rather than sharing with the outside world,” Boateng said.

“We haven’t spoken to Gyan yet so we will not disclose anything until we have spoken to the player himself.”

With 51 goals in 109 appearances for the national team, Boateng says the technical team can only ‘applaud the achievement’ of Ghana Gyan.

“We as staff have so much respect for Gyan. As a player and person, he is a very good friend of mine and what he has done for Ghana is amazing.

“Top goal scorer, six goals at the World Cup, it’s amazing. You can only applaud his achievement.”
