Court Convicts and fines 16 NPP thugs for invading UTV

The Achimota Magistrate Court has convicted and fined sixteen (16) thugs affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who were detained for storming the United Television (UTV) on Saturday, October 7, 2023.

They were subsequently charged for being on the premises for unlawful purposes and arraigned before the court today, 16th October 2023.

The accused persons pleaded guilty to the charge against them. They were, therefore, convicted on their own pleas and sentenced to a fine of 200 penalty units each which amounts to Two Thousand Four Hundred Ghana Cedis (GH 2,400.00) in default 3 months imprisonment. They were also ordered by the Court to sign a bond to be of good behaviour in default of 6 months imprisonment.

On Saturday, October 7, during the station’s prime-time entertainment show, ‘United Showbiz,’ attackers  rushed into the UTV studio, disrupted the live broadcast, and threatened the presenter and her guests.

It later emerged that the thugs were led by the Klottey Korle Youth Organizer of the NPP, allegedly under the orders of Ernest Owusu Bempah, a Deputy Director of Communications and other leading figures of the ruling New Patriotic Party .
