Former GUTA Prez Fumes At ETLS For Promoting Unfair Trade Among Other ECOWAS Member States

The immediate past President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) who doubles as the Chairman for the Council of Elders for GUTA, Barima Dr. Nana Ofori Ameyaw l has described the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Trade Liberalization Scheme to be promoting unfair trade practices among other ECOWAS Member States.

He explained that the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS), which is a trade instrument aimed at encouraging duty-free trade among the ECOWAS Member States, has been infringed upon as ECOWAS sit unconcerned to witness its Member States like Nigeria practice unfair trade with a ban on the importation of about forty-one (41) goods to the country through its provision list.

This according to the businessman goes contrary to the ETLS stipulated rules, but has still had ECOWAS make no move towards halting the practice labeled as ‘unfair trade’ by Nigeria.

He relayed this to Sompa News Eric Annan at an entrepreneurship seminar organized by the Senior Staff Association of the University of Cape Coast (SSA-UCC) on Thursday, November 23, 2023, on the theme: ‘Empowering Senior Staff for Entrepreneurial Success; An Added Advantage’.

Barima Dr. Nana Ofori Ameyaw further impelled the Government of Ghana to equally place a ban on all imported goods from Nigeria, should the country persist in rejecting Ghanaian goods from entering its borders with the choked market the country is currently experiencing.

Mr. Bernard Ato Otabil, Director at the Office of Ethics and Internal Investigations at the Bank of Ghana who spoke as a Guest Speaker at the program, advised members of the UCC Senior Staff Association never to eschew the ethics required of them in their day-to-day activities both at the university or as entrepreneurs.

Hon. Kwamena Minta Nyarku, the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast North Constituency upon gracing the occasion as a Special Guest and having advised members of the UCC Senior Staff Association to try and earn additional income to what they receive from the university through entrepreneurship, equally enlightened them on the need to build effective networks that will be critical to their welfare as individuals.
