Ghana AIDS Commission Celebrates World AIDS Day with Farmers in Kumasi

Ghana AIDS Commission on Friday, 1st December 2023, celebrates the 2023 World AIDS Day with Farmers in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region on the theme “LET COMMUNITIES LEAD”.

Speaking on the theme ” Let Community Leads” Mrs Olivia Greham, Ghana Aids commission Ashanti Regional Technical Coordinator said the world can end AIDS with communities leading the way.

According to her, Organisations of communities living with, at risk of, or affected by HIV are the frontline of progress in the HIV response.

“Communities connect people with person-centered public health services, build trust, innovate, monitor implementation of policies and services, and hold providers accountable”, She added.

Additionally, she said communities are being held back in their leadership, and funding shortages, policy and regulatory hurdles, capacity constraints, and crackdowns on civil society and the human rights of marginalized communities, are obstructing the progress of HIV prevention and treatment services.

“If these obstacles are removed, community-led organizations can add even greater impetus to the global HIV response, advancing progress towards the end of AIDS”. She stressed.

Mrs. Greham says this year World AIDS Day is more than a celebration of the achievements of communities; it is a call to action to enable and support communities in their leadership roles.

According to the Ghana AIDS Commission, 354000 people were affected in the year, 2022. Ashanti region alone recorded 72700 and above.

World AIDS Day 2023 which also marks the National Farmers Day in Ghana has allowed the Commission to share with Ghanaian farmers the importance of prevention and will highlight that to unleash the full potential of community leadership to enable the end of AIDS.

The program was held at Jubilee Park in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

She further appeals to the general public to refrain from stigmatizing of person who is affected by the virus.

Mrs. Olivia Graham finally called on the public to come to the commission’s aid by donating to the HIV support fund through the following code *9898#.
