GRNMA strike: Don’t politicize nurses’ concerns – NDC USA Deputy Secretary for Operations

The Deputy Secretary for Operations of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) USA Chapter, Mr. Okyeame Kofi Adu, has called on stakeholders to refrain from politicizing the ongoing nationwide strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

According to him, the strike is a matter of national concern that directly affects the lives and well-being of Ghanaians, especially the poor and vulnerable.

He disclosed that it is highly important to protect human life above all political or bureaucratic considerations. Mr. Adu expressed deep concern about the impact of the industrial action on healthcare delivery across the country.

“A life lost is irreplaceable. We must prioritize the health and safety of Ghanaian citizens and all others within our borders. This is not the time to politicize the concerns of nurses and midwives who form the backbone of our health system.” he stated.

He further revealed that negotiations over the GRNMA’s conditions of service began several years ago under the previous NPP administration. However, he cited President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment during the 2024 campaign to continue and complete all meaningful projects and initiatives started by previous governments.

“President Mahama made it clear during his campaign that no viable project or program would be abandoned under his leadership. This principle must be extended to resolving issues such as this, which directly affect public welfare.” he noted.

The NDC USA Deputy Secretary-Operation appealed to the leadership and members of GRNMA to consider the plight of ordinary citizens and return to work while constructive dialogue continues. He also urged the government, through the Ministry of Health, to engage in sincere and expedited negotiations to address the legitimate concerns of health workers.

calling on all relevant stakeholders including the government, the Minister for Health, and civil society organizations to work collaboratively with the leadership of GRNMA to reach a fair and lasting resolution.

“The Ghanaian citizen’s healthcare should be a top priority for every government. Many Ghanaians, especially the underprivileged, rely solely on public health facilities for their survival. We cannot afford to let bureaucracy cost lives.” He stated

The NDC USA Chapter reiterated its support for health professionals across the country and urged national leaders to handle the situation with the urgency and seriousness it deserves.
