Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare donates one month salary to support ‘Mahama Cares’ Medical Trust Fund

the Member of Parliament for Techiman North and Minister for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Hon. Lawyer Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has donated one month of her salary to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares.

Her generous pledge was made during the official launch of the Mahama Cares initiative at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. The fund seeks to provide vital financial assistance to individuals battling chronic and life-threatening illnesses across the country.

Hon. Ofosu-Adjare disclosed that the Mahama Cares Fund is about compassion, fairness, and giving hope to families who are struggling to access lifesaving medical care. During her pledge, she explained that she and three other ministers could not pledge more than the Minister of Health, who had committed three months of his salary, an amount that also does not exceed the President’s six-month salary pledge.

“We also cannot go above the Minister of Health, so as colleagues, the three of us here are each donating one month of our salary,” she said.

Her donation followed the announcement by the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, who committed six months of his salary to the fund. The Minister for Health and MP for Juaboso, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, also committed three months of his salary.

Other notable contributions at the event included a $1,000.00 cheque from Rev. Emeritus Prof. Seth Aryeetey, Chair of the National Task Force for the establishment of the fund, and a GH₵100,000.00 pledge by Dr. Kwame Anim-Boamah, Chief Executive Officer of UGMC, on behalf of the Centre.

The Mahama Cares initiative is a bold and compassionate step toward reshaping healthcare access in Ghana. By focusing on support for patients with chronic and debilitating conditions, it aims to reduce financial burdens and bring dignity and care to those in dire need.
