I’m the only one with the power to destool chiefs – Otumfuo chides subject who ‘removed’ Donyinahene

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, chided one of his subjects during the sitting of the Kumasi Traditional Council on Monday, February 10, 2025.

According to opemsuo.com, the subject, who was named Appiah Kwarteng, claimed to have destooled Donyinahene Nana Osei Dankwa Brafo II.

Appiah Kwarteng is said to have invoked the Great Oath against the chief to prevent him from enstooling anyone other than his niece as the queen mother of Donyina.

He also invoked another oath challenging the royalty of Nana Brafo II, before subsequently performing the ram slaughtering rite to destool the chief.

But speaking on the matter at Monday’s sitting, the Asantehene asked Appiah Kwarteng about the authority he has to destool chiefs.

The king pointed out that no person, other than himself, can destool a chief who has sworn allegiance to him.

“Who gave you the authority to destool?… It is not tradition to slaughter a ram to destool him. I am the only one with the authority to take that action,” he is quoted to have said.

The Otumfuo reportedly also said that he still recognises Nana Brafo II as the Donyinahene.

“I still recognise him as the occupant of the Donyina Stool. How will you feel if I destool him now and install you in his stead and a different person comes to challenge your authority by slaughtering a ram to destool you?” he asked Kwarteng.

The Asantehene then went ahead to direct his subject to perform all the needed rituals to revert his actions and re-present his case to the council.

“I have cancelled the case you have brought now. Go and perform the needed rites and then come back to make your case so we look into it,” he added.

The Asantehene, therefore, charged Nana Osei Dankwa II to proceed with the enstoolment of a queen, adding that the chief and the person he installs as queen mother would be removed by him if Kwarteng proves his case.

“If investigations later prove that the chief is not a royal after you re-make your case, I will simply destool the chief and queen. However, I will not allow anyone to use intimidation to frustrate tradition and customs. Before you re-make your case, I would be done with my investigations into the family tree,” the Asantehene said.
