NDC Likely to lose the Nkwatia seat should Nana Yaw Addo win the constituency chairmanship of NPP

Press Release: Ndc Likely to lose the Nkwatia seat should Nana Yaw Addo win the constituency chairmanship of Npp.

Anchoring Democracy Advocacy Movement Ghana (Adam-GH) that anchors proper democratic principles, rule of law, fight against corruption and protect the human rights of citizens.

We found political developments in the Akwatia Constituency within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) interesting and have keenly followed these activities ahead of the 2020 General elections.

This is a Constituency that made a record of producing a Member of Parliament (MP) in the person of Hon. Ama Sey who is successful entrepreneur and thought to belong to the less educated class but was able to defeat a lawyer of high repute in the person of Hon. Baba Jamal to annex the seat from the NDC in the 2016 General elections.

Fast forward into the 2020 general elections she lost to one Mr. Ernest Yaw Kumi at the NPP Parliamentary primaries who enjoyed the support of Miss Kate Gyamfuah, the current National women’s organizer of the NPP to annex the seat from Hon. Ama Sey to the surprise and indignation of the Akwatia Constituents who admired this woman for her hard work, accessibility and humility as Member of Parliament.

She subsequently raised questions about the lack of fairness and transparency in the said elections and consistent with the guidelines of the elections accordingly called for a recount but was denied.

At this moment it was becoming clear that the center could not hold as her exit was a decision viewed as most unpopular amongst the rank and file of Party in particular and the constituents as a whole.

Party hierarchies and stalwarts were deployed to discourage the MP from contesting as an independent candidate but rather support the bid of MrErnest Yaw Kumi with the promise of an appointment of either herself or any person of her choice to appease for what investment she may have lost. The like of Hon. Yaw Osafo Marfo, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, Sammy Awuku and other party stalwarts to prevent any attempt to go as independent candidate as such move had the tendency to undermine the chances of the NPP to retain the Akwatia seat which they ended losing anyway.

As the Director of Operations I was deployed with my 5 man into the constituency to do an assessment of the situation and a number of development convinced us that the people were peeved and were ready to retaliate by voting for their Presidential candidate Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo but then Vote massively for the NDC candidate Hon. Okoyo.

We visited five Muslim dominated areas perceived to be NDC stronghold and there we were convinced the seat will be lost to NDC.

Ahead of the elections of the polling station executive Position the register was manipulated for whatever reason to provide support and advantage to one camp over the others which culminated into the acclamation of the Constituency executives without allowing for an elections to take place. Nana Yaw Addo an NPP member and an activist of the NPP party spearheaded an appeal process and petitioning against that acts to the Cecilia Dapaah’s ADR committee but to no avail then subsequently resolved to seek refuge in the Koforidua High Court.

The judgment vindicated the Nana Yaw Addo led team whose only agenda is to ensure the tenets of democracy is upheld in all the activities of the party including the elections of executives at all levels and not imposition.

The court has accordingly directed inter Alia, the reorganisation of the party from the polling station level to the Constituency through elections.

Out of the 113 polling Stations
565 delegates in total,
340 from our research has fallen for the Nana Yaw Addo led team who are perceived to be sympathetic to Hon. Ama Sey and that is what gives the clear indication that the Nana Yaw Addo’s Chairmanship is only a matter of time and only awaiting to be declared on the 11th February 2023.

Ama Sey on the other hand will certainly leverage on what seem to be a welcoming development to relaunch her comeback to contest for the Parliamentary primaries and victory is the only predictable phenomenon. What the NDC should watch is the overwhelming influence and popularity of the Character of Ama Sey that permeates every strata of the political parties within the Akwatia Constituency because of business background and philanthropic gestures to all manner of person regardless of one’s political party.

The NDC will require a serious strategy to outwit the NPP and break the influence and the goodwill of Hon. Ama Sey to retain the seat. Interesting times ahead.

Signed….
