Inmates at the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons in the Eastern region have benefited from government’s One District, One Factory (1D1F) programme with the commissioning of Brompton Portfolio Limited’s tissue making factory at the prison camp on Tuesday.
Speaking at the commissioning of the factory, the National Coordinator of the 1D1F initiative, Gifty Ohene Konadu stated that the new factory forms part of a project between Brompton Limited and Ghana Prisons Service dubbed ‘Project Efiase.’
According to the National Coordinator, the project is to provide additional source of income to the Service, improve the conditions of the prison, and provide employable skills and income to inmates as well as fulfill the facility’s mandate as a reformation centre.
“The company has acquired modern machinery and equipment with the capacity to produce over 160,000 packs of tissue papers and toilet rolls per month and trade under the brand name softex, suitable for both domestic and industrial purposes,”she said.
“The company has successfully received certification from Ghana Standards Authority, Environmental Protection Agency and Ghana Free Zones Authority to operate ;with the total project cost estimated at GH¢ 4 million with funds from the National Investment Bank and Ghana Commercial Bank Limited through the facilitation of the 1D1F Programme,” she added.
The Managing Director of Brompton Portfolio, James Yankah revealed that the company has the capacity to provide 105 jobs for inmates of the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons and 5,500 sales distributors across the country, adding that they may extent it to other prisons.
“I am aware about the high demand for tissues in the country so we will do our best to produce more to meet the high local demand and also export some to earn foreign exchange,” he assured.
The Director-General of Ghana Prisons Service, Patrick Darko Missah also stated that they are committed to use agriculture to generate income to compliment government’s support for the service.
“We are grateful to government and the company for the initiative and promise to make good use of the factory to the benefit of inmates,” he said.
