The Offinso Ahyirem Royal Family Elders have refuted what they consider to be disparaging remarks made by a group called “Concern Youth of Offinso” during a press conference a few days ago, and they have wished to publicly distance themselves from such allegations.
The young people’s slogan, “no K.K. Sarpong, no Chief,” has also been discredited by them, who assert that nowhere on earth Asanteman has ever elected a chief to a chieftaincy position by the power of placards or through demonstrations.
According to the Elders, the “Asantehene, Otumfuor Osei Tutu II” ” the King and the owner of the Asante Kingdom can only decide, and make his own decisions and no one can overturn or contest them.
At their press conference, the concerned youth protested Manhyia Palace’s decision to replace the late paramount chief, Nana Wiafe Akenten II, with a new member of the Offinso Traditional Area Kingmakers, rather than Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong, the former CEO of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).
In their press statement, they stated that Offinso Hemaa should be allowed to carry out her duties and that the Asantehene has no authority to dethrone or enstool any paramount chief.
During a rebuttal press conference on Thursday, November 2, 2023, Nana Kwaku Bour, the head of the Offinso Ahyirem Royal Family, criticized the way the young are presenting the problem, saying that the Asantehene is against Dr. K.K. Sarpong’s to be enstooled as the Offinso paramount chief.
He clarified that Dr. K.K. Sarpong is not descended from royalty and is not entitled to the mighty seat of Offinso.
Dr. K.K. Sarpong, according to Nana Bour, has never buried his mother or any other family relative at Offinso, and he lacks any documentation attesting to his royalty.
“His building in Offinso was constructed very recently. A royal is not meant to give money in cash during a one-week observation period, but Dr. K.K. Sarpong did so even during the late Nana Wiafe Akenten II’s observation”. He added.
Offinso Ahyirem Royal Family is appealing to Asantehene, Otumfuor Osei Tutu II “The King and the owner of the Asante Kingdom” to consider not the bad behavior that the youth exhibited, but look into the matter as it is and decide, and take his own decisions that no one can overturn or contest them to ensure peace in the Offinso traditional area of the Asanteman.
