‘Only 20 MPs out of 275 understand legislative work of parliament’ – Majority Leader

Majority Leader has expressed fear for parliament over the lack of quality of persons who get the opportunity to be parliamentarians.

Out of the 275 MPs we have in parliament, only 20 of them are keen on the legislative work of the House.

“We don’t have more than 20 MPs who follow the legislative work of parliament. This is troubling.”

The experienced parliamentarian bemoaned the lack of experience and technical knowledge on issues especially on the scrutiny of the budget.

The MP who is seeking his last term in office told Kwabena Agyapong, host of Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that he fears for parliament after he bows out due to the experience he would be taking along.

The election of MPs he bemoaned has been reduced to monecracy where persons with enough resources but lack the needed experience get the nod to be in parliament.

Parliament with oversight responsibility, over the executive, does it work through committees but these committees usually are unable to do efficient work, he lamented.

Although he wouldn’t blame the committees, he said the blame should be left at the doorstep of our processes in electing parliamentarians.

He advised political parties to put in measures to elect qualified, experienced and candidates with the ability to work efficiently to make the work of parliament successful.

He said, without a well-functioned parliament, the executive would not be able to function properly.

Some persons also come to parliament with the perception of making money, and yet when they come and realise these perceptions are unrealistic, they become frustrated,” he added.
