The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, commissioned the much-anticipated Jamestown Fishing Harbour on Friday, September 13, 2024, an occasion that had been eagerly awaited by the people within the coastal community of Jamestown, Accra.
This facility is state-of-the-art and underscores a promise realized in transforming Ghana’s fishing industry to ensure an improvement in the livelihood of the local fisherfolk.
A project which was discussed in the 1960s has seen the light of day under the Akufo-Addo administration.
Trumpeting “This harbour is not only a structure but a hope and a resilience”, the President said that abounded with modern facilities – a fish market, an ice-making plant, and a cold store, the harbour would transform the economic prospects of the catchment area and increase fish production.
President Akufo-Addo, whose roots in the politics and people of Jamestown run very deep, beamed with pride at fulfilling this promise, which had been at the very core of his campaigns: “Today, we move beyond rhetoric to action.”
This is a job-creating project, one that economically empowers women traders and changes community dynamics that could be part of Ghana’s larger socio-economic development.
