Six die in galamsey pit

Six people have died at two separate illegal mining sites at Obengkrom a farming community at Ellembelle and Akango community also in the Nzema East districts all in the Western Region.

Western Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Olivia Ewurabena Adiku revealed to Empire News in Takoradi that four persons believed to be illegal miners from Old Abelebo went to Obengkrom to work in an abandoned “galamsey pit but got trapped and died.

They have been identified as Nicholas Eduajo aged 37, Thomas Kwoffie 30, Comfort Cudjoe 28 and Monica Mensah 27.

At Akango in the Nzema East district, two people die while the other two also sustained serious injuries after using dynamite to mine. The two who died have been identified as Eric Akwasi aged 27 and Gideon Akatsi 45.

DSP Olivia Adiku said all the six bodies have been deposited at the Axim government morgue for autopsy, preservation and also allow investigations to continue
Gradually the dangers associated with illegal mining seem to roar its ugly head again as operators of the illegal activity are said to be back at it in the various areas again.
