Things We Eat That Stain Our Teeth

Woman's Smile

Though they may be good for us internally, some of the foods we eat can leave unsightly marks on our teeth. Teeth discoloration is caused, in part, by the acidity and pigmentation of certain foods, as reported by Healthline. The following foods contain pigments that can stain your teeth:

1. The tanning process for leather uses phenols, a complex plant substance found in coffee. Coffee’s tannic acid causes the beverage’s color to cling to the enamel of your teeth, permanently discoloring them.

Red wine’s acidity can erode tooth enamel and cause fissures to form in your teeth, so be careful if you drink a lot of it. Consuming red wine can cause permanent discoloration of the teeth because it wears away the protective layer of enamel. The high acidity of red wine causes discoloration of tooth enamel.

Third, consuming carbonated beverages containing kola extracts can alter the color of your teeth. Carbonated drinks and kola can erode tooth enamel and expose the dentin beneath.
