US, Russia issue Ethiopia travel advisories as rebels threaten to hit capital

The United States and Russia have issued travel advisories to their nationals asking them to strongly reconsider travel to Ethiopia.

The notice comes at a time two major rebel groups have threatened to march into the capital Addis Ababa to overthrow the Abiy Ahmed-led government.

The US advisory read in part: “We strongly suggest that US citizens seriously reconsider travel to Ethiopia and those who are currently in Ethiopia consider making preparations to leave the country.”

It added: “The security environment in Ethiopia has deteriorated significantly in the last several days with a continued escalation of armed conflict and civil unrest in Amhara, Afar and Tigray. A significant portion of the A2 highway connecting Addis Ababa with cities to the north has been restricted by Federal authorities which has led to disruptions, stranded travelers, and a generally non-permissive travel environment.”

“ATTENTION! In connection with the aggravation of the socio-political situation in the host country, we recommend that Russian citizens, if possible, refrain from trips to Ethiopia that are not associated with an urgent need,” the Russian Embassy in Addis Ababa tweeted.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia on Tuesday declared a nationwide State of Emergency and asked residents of the capital to prepare to defend their neighbourhoods as and when.

Reports indicate that diplomats are in a frenzy with some already preparing to leave the country over fears of a full-blown crisis.
