One fascinating thing about fishes is, some of them carry two “stones” in their head.

Fishes such as red fish, hake and cod fish all have these “stones” in their heads. But why do they have these “stones” in their heads and how it they get there? Well, let us find out.

These “stones” found in the heads of some fishes are called otoliths.

Otoliths are not just in the heads of some fishes for fun but have various purposes.

Otoliths which mainly consist of calcium carbonate are found in fishes for the purposes of balance and hearing.

They come in different sizes depending on the type of fish.

Otoliths can also be used to determine the age of the fish.

These rocky pearls in fishes are usually used as pendants by fishermen to help them by granting them luck in fishing.

Most people also use this otolith for jewellery. Thus, they use it for necklaces, earrings and rings.
