15 children dead, 25 missing after their boat capsized in Nigeria

Fifteen children drowned and 25 others went missing when a boat they were commuting with capsized on the Shagari River in the north-western part of Nigeria.

According to Aliyu Abubakar, a political administrator of the Shagari district who supervised the rescue operation, the children were on their way to collect firewood on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, when their overloaded vessel overturned.

He also told the AFP news agency that the bodies of 13 girls and 2 boys were recovered by local rescue teams and buried.
