Akufo-Addo urges doctors to accept postings to rural areas

President Akufo-Addo has described as distressing the refusal of some doctors to accept postings to rural and underserved communities.

Addressing a Public Lecture to commemorate the 60th Anniversary Celebrations of the University of Ghana Medical School, the President urged student doctors to follow the footsteps of their forebears by accepting to do their housemanship in such communities.

President Akufo-Addo also disclosed that the doctor, dentist and population ratio remains unsatisfactory after 65-years of nationhood.

“We currently do not have the right numbers of doctors, dentists, nurses and health care professionals with right niche and expertise in our regions, districts and deprive communities. Especially for the newly created regions and districts.

“The news of doctors refusing posting to these areas is particularly distressing. I encourage all medical practitioners to follow the worthy examples of your great forbearers,” President Akufo-Addo advised.

He called for a rethink in the medical education curriculum in order to fuse it with modern technology in achieving better results in the field.

The lecture which was addressed by a former Deputy Director of the World Health Organization, Dr. Anarfi Asamoa-Baah attracted alumni of the school as well as Minister’s, Deputy Minister’s among others.

He called for a proper look at how doctors are trained in the country especially admissions into the schools.
