Efua Ghartey Makes History As She’s Elected First Female President of Ghana Bar Association

Efua Ghartey, an experienced lawyer and wife of former Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Minister of Justice and Attorney-General, Joe Ghartey, has made history as she becomes the first woman to be elected to the position of the President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA).

 

She was elected during the GBA election held at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology TechnologyTechnology (KNUST).

 

She pulled 1,208 votes while her closest rival, Kwadzo Dzakpasu garnered 1,060 votes.

 

Mrs. Ghartey had previously contested the GBA election on two occasions and lost on both occasions with narrow margins to Tony Forson, and Yaw Boafo, the current national President.

 

The legal practitioner in 1994, co-founded Ghartey & Ghartey, a law firm, with Hon. Joe Ghartey.

 

In her acceptance speech, the GBA President-elect promised to protect the legal profession, expressing her Joy to be elected the first female President of the Association.

 

She said: “I am humbled and honored to be the first female President of the Ghana Bar Association, this indeed is something new that the bar for the first time has entrusted leadership to the ladies.”

 

According to Mrs. Ghartey, “We shall make you proud. We shall make sure that you never regret this choice. What we ask for moving forward is that not only do you pray for us but also hold our hands.”
