FEED GHANA PROGRAMME: A Fantastic Initiative, let us embrace it – Eric Amoah

Mr. Eric Amoah, an educationist and former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) aspirant for Techiman North, has expressed his full support and admiration for the launch of the FEED GHANA PROGRAMME initiated by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama and the Honourable Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku (MP). The programme was officially launched on Saturday, April 12, 2025, in Techiman, Bono East Region.

Mr. Amoah described the programme as a “fantastic and mind-blowing initiative” that comes at a critical time when food prices in Ghana are escalating at an alarming rate due to the country’s heavy reliance on imported food and food products.

“Ghana spends over $2 billion annually on food imports, with poultry alone accounting for $300 million. This dependence places our economy at risk, making it vulnerable to international market shocks and the depreciation of the Cedi,” he stated.

He lauded President Mahama for his visionary leadership in introducing such a transformative agricultural policy aimed at reducing Ghana’s dependence on food imports and boosting local food production to stabilize food prices.

Mr. Amoah emphasized that the FEED GHANA PROGRAMME is not only a policy intervention but a wake-up call to all Ghanaians, especially the youth, to become active participants in national development through agriculture. He drew historical parallels to the 1972 Operation Feed Yourself programme led by General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong, which significantly improved the nation’s food security through local efforts.

“We must change the narrative that sees farming as a punishment. Agriculture is a dignified and essential occupation that can drive our economy forward. With the right support, equipment, and mindset, our youth can be at the forefront of Ghana’s agribusiness revolution,” Mr. Amoah urged.

As an educationist, Mr. Amoah called on all Basic and Senior High Schools, as well as tertiary institutions, to actively participate in the initiative by engaging students in school farming projects and agribusiness education. He believes this will help reorient the perception of farming among the younger generation and instill a culture of self-sufficiency and entrepreneurship.

Mr. Amoah concluded by encouraging every Ghanaian, regardless of status or background, to contribute to this national agenda by rearing poultry, cultivating backyard gardens, and supporting local farmers.

“Let us rally behind the FEED GHANA PROGRAMME. It is a national cause, and together, we can build a stronger economy, create jobs, stabilize our currency, and ensure food security for generations to come.”
