LIVESTREAMING: Kenya swears in President Ruto and DP Gachagua

Kenyans from across the country have converged at the Kasarani Stadium in the capital Nairobi for the investiture of president-elect William Samoei Ruto as the fifth president of the country.

Ruto won the August 9 presidential elections beating veteran opposition leader, Raila Odinga.

Today’s swearing in will see Uhuru Kenyatta hand over officially to Ruto. Ruto, the outgoing deputy president will see Rigathi Gachagua, sworn in as new deputy president.

The campaign vehicle that brought them to power, the Kenya Kwanza Alliance, also has control of the National Assembly and the Senate.

Local media portals have reported that some 17 African Heads of State are in town for the event.

The Citizen newspaper reported that all the Presidents from the East African Community are among those on the list of dignitaries.

The seven are Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni, Samia Suluhu Hassan (Tanzania), Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Évariste Ndayishimiye (Burundi), Felix Tshisekedi (DRC Congo), Hassan Sheikh Mohamud (Somalia) and Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan.

Also on the list of dignitaries are Presidents Dennis Nguesso (Congo), Ismail Guelleh (Djibouti), Filipe Nyusi (Mozambique), Brahim Ghail (Sahrawi Republic), Emmerson Mnangagwa (Zimbabwe), and Azali Assousmani (Comoros)

Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera, Guinea Bissau President Umaro Embalo, and President of Seychelles Wavel Ramkalawan (Seychelles) are also attending.

Some Heads of State are sending various top officials to attend the event with Cuba sending its deputy Prime Minister Ines Maria Chapman. Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, South Africa, Iran, and Nigeria will send their vice presidents to the swearing-in, the report added.
