NDC Leadership Criticizes Withdrawal of Assin Central Candidate, Cites Constitutional Violations

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership has deemed the withdrawal of Nurein Shaibu Migyimah, the Assin Central parliamentary candidate, as “inappropriate” and not in accordance with the NDC constitution, citing violations of articles 40, 41, 46, and 48.

The withdrawal announcement, made by the Central Regional Chairman,Gabriel Commey, cited that Nurein Shaibu Migyimah was found guilty of immoral acts and anti-party activities. Commey’s letter stated that the Central Regional Functional Executive Committee decided to withdraw Migyimah’s candidature after thorough investigations and deliberations on complaints filed against him.

However, the NDC national leadership has challenged the legitimacy of this decision. In an official statement, the NDC leadership indicated that the withdrawal decision was made without the approval of the National Executive Committee (NEC), thereby breaching party protocols.

The statement from the NDC General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, reads: “The said letter seeks to communicate a decision of the Regional Functional Executive Committee in respect of the withdrawal of the Assin Central Parliamentary Candidate to the Constituency Chairman and the Secretary. The above-mentioned action if true, was taken without the approval of the National Executive Committee and is considered inappropriate and in contravention of due process and the provisions of articles 40, 41, 46 and 48 of the NDC constitution.”

The Central Regional Chairman and the Regional Secretary have been summoned to appear before the national leadership on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at 2 PM to explain how the letter was issued without the NEC’s approval.

This internal conflict underscores the challenges the NDC faces in maintaining cohesion and adherence to its constitutional procedures as it prepares for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
