Policeman commits suicide in South Sudan

A 28-year-old policeman died by suicide after hanging himself on a rope on Wednesday at the Hai Jebel residential area of Wau town in Western Bahr el Ghazal State of South Sudan.

Family members said the late Arop Peter Kuol had started exhibiting signs of mental and physical distress.

His sister, Ayut Manut Yai, told Radio Tamazuj that the incident happened a day after he started malaria and typhoid treatment.

“These days, we have been staying together with him and he has not quarreled with anyone, because people could say he was annoyed. He just started saying things which are uncomprehensible that someone wanted to shoot him in the head, our father wants to kill him, things like that,” she explained.

Ayut continued, “Yesterday (Tuesday) he was taken to the hospital and they said he had malaria and typhoid and he was given injections. We sat with him and he did not speak to any of us.”

She added that the next morning they found his body hanging on a rope in his room and the door was open.

The state police deputy commissioner Major General James Simon confirmed the incident and said it was a case of suicide.

“The case was brought to the police that one of your colleagues committed suicide. Our team has confirmed it and those who are investigating have confirmed that the incident is a clear case of suicide, nobody was behind it,” he said.

He added that a case has been opened at the police station and investigations will be done to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the death of the policeman.
