Suspected dam poisoning hits Damongo

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for West Gonja District, Saeed Muhazu Jibril has stopped water tankers from supplying residents of Damongo with water from the main source of water following a change in colour and continues demise of water species in the dam.

Many residents of the Savannah regional capital believe the dam might have been poisoned for the second time by some fisherfolks resulting in the contamination of the water. Others are of the belief that pesticides used by farmers around the dam might have leached into the reservoir, Class FM’s Savannah Regional Correspondent, Zion Abdul-Rauf, reported on Monday, 11 November 2019.

The DCE, therefore, halted the water supplies by the tanker operators in order to prevent an outbreak of water-borne infections in Damongo.

Meanwhile, there is an acute water shortage in the area for the past two days with residents travelling to nearby communities in search of water for domestic use.

The contaminated dam, built in 1963, has been the source of water for farmers and resident in the Damongo district.
