Farmers along with local residents from Kuntunso, a rural farming settlement in the Techiman Traditional Area, organized a calm protest to oppose what they claim is the unlawful transfer and ruin of their agricultural plots by the Hansuahene.
The upset group submitted a formal appeal to the Techimanhene, Oseadeeyo Akumfi Ameyaw IV, via the Techiman Kronti Royal Family, whom they view as their rightful traditional overseers, urging immediate action to safeguard their properties and sources of income.
The protesters reported that unknown individuals first damaged their farms, but further probes pointed to involvement by the Hansuahene, escalating community unrest.
A large number of those impacted are female farmers, who expressed deep distress over how the ordeal has devastated their means of support and their children’s schooling. They noted that without their fields, covering everyday family costs and educational fees has become extremely challenging.
Throughout the march, officers from the Ghana Police Service ensured safety and escorted the group along Kuntunso’s main roads as they headed to the Kuntunso Palace to deliver their appeal to the Kronti Royal Family for forwarding to the Techimanhene.
Several participants shared with Classic FM that the ongoing farm devastation and absence of a permanent fix have left them deeply discouraged and financially exposed.
Following the submission of the appeal, community youth leader Nana Kofi Mensah stated that the farmers are demanding fairness, security for their agricultural lands, and an explicit order from the Techimanhene to stop any additional claimed sales or damage to their properties.
He added that the protest was one step in delivering a formal grievance to relevant officials across the Bono East Region.
“We are here to present a petition to the Bono East Regional Police Commander and the Bono East Regional Minister to peacefully demonstrate against some issues affecting our community.”
Representing the group, he charged that Nana Hansuahene has seized their properties and ruined their crops, leading to grave effects on local food supply, family earnings, and overall household well-being.
He clarified that, belonging to the Kuntunso area under the authority of the Techiman Kronti Royal Family, they had already channeled their complaint through the proper customary routes.
“We have observed that Nana Hansuahene has taken over our lands and has been destroying our farms. We are therefore using this demonstration to channel our grievances to our Paramount Chief, Oseadeeyo Akumfi Ameyaw IV, regarding this issue.
“As residents of Kuntunso under the jurisdiction of the Techiman Kronti Royal Family, we have presented our petition to the Kronti Royal Family, and we believe it will, in turn, be forwarded to our Paramount Chief.”
Accepting the document for the Kronti Royal Family, Nana Kwadwo Yeboah promised the protesters that their issues would receive proper attention.
“We have been delegated to meet you and receive your petition. The Kronti Royal Family wishes to assure you that your grievances will be addressed.” He said.
He urged the farmers to stay composed and wait patiently, stating, “We kindly ask that you exercise patience and have faith in the leadership of the Kronti Royal Family and the Techiman Traditional Council to resolve this matter amicably.”
