Techiman Nifahene calls for reintroduction of puberty rites to curb teenage pregnancy

The Nifahene and Aduanahene of the Techiman Traditional Area, Nana Boakye Ameyaw Pemtemprem II, has called for the reintroduction of puberty rites and other positive cultural practices to help curb teenage pregnancy and other social vices while promoting the rich cultural heritage of the country.

He made this call during the celebration of the 2025 Munufie Yam Festival at the Techiman Aduana Royal Palace.

According to Nana Boakye Ameyaw Pemtemprem II, the neglect of some of the country’s cultural practices has contributed significantly to the rise in social vices in modern times.

“We have abandoned most of our culture and traditions, and as a result, social vices are now rampant in our communities. Although some forms of social vices existed in the olden days, they were not as widespread as what we are experiencing now, and that is because we have neglected our culture and traditions.” He stated.

The Techiman Nifahene further explained that puberty rites in the past played a crucial role in guiding young girls and protecting them from early pregnancies.

“In the past, teenage pregnancy was not common due to the practice of puberty rites. Nowadays, since we no longer practice puberty rites in our communities, teenage pregnancy has become rampant, and this is very worrying. We all know the negative effects of teenage pregnancy: it leads to school dropouts, and in some cases, girls resort to abortion, which may even result in death.”

Nana Boakye Ameyaw Pemtemprem II therefore urged traditional leaders and stakeholders to work towards reviving and sustaining cultural practices that uphold discipline, morality, and community values.

“I encourage all of us, especially our traditional leaders, to revamp puberty rites and other cultural practices in our communities, because our culture has a lot to teach us, and we must preserve it.” He told our reporter.
