Three dead after two-storey building collapses at Kasoa

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed the deaths of three people following the collapse of a two-storey building near the Timber Market in Kasoa on Saturday (August 24, 2024).

A joint team from the Kasoa Fire Service Station and the GNFS Headquarters rescued four others from the debris. The injured were promptly transported to the hospital for medical treatment.

In an interview with TV3 Ghana, Assistant Divisional Officer Alex King Nartey, of the GNFS Public Affairs Unit, confirmed that the collapsed structure was a two-storey building under construction.

Among the deceased were two female students from a vocational institute, aged 16 and 18, and a carpenter. ADO Nartey also noted that six others had received medical treatment and were subsequently discharged.

The GNFS suspects that the building had lost its structural integrity, although investigations are still ongoing. “From what our men on the ground have gathered, there were significant structural deficits in the construction of this building,” Nartey said.

He urged the public to hire professionals during construction projects to ensure structural safety and consistency.
