Common Causes of Vaginal Infection

Yeast infections in the vagina and vulva are fungal infections that lead to irritation, discharge, and severe itching in those areas.

Vaginal yeast infections, also known as vaginal candidiasis, affect as many as three-quarters of all women at some point in their lives. In many cases, women will have multiple episodes.

Healthline lists the following as risk factors for genital infections that women should avoid at all costs:

1. The use of soap, body wash, and cologne to clean the genital area.

The pH of your vaginal area can also be altered by using soap, body wash, or perfume. Even though it’s fine to rinse your vulva and vagina with water, using any other product or smelling anything other than water can kill the good bacteria in your vagina and make you more susceptible to infection.

3. Spermicidal contraceptive use

Forms of this contraception might include a gel, a film, or a suppository. It dissolves after being inserted into the vaginal canal, killing any sperm that may have made it there. Although spermicides can be useful for some, they come with risks including vaginal irritation, inflammation, and infection.

4. Combine detergent and fabric softener

Have you noticed any changes since switching detergents? Yeast infections are exacerbated by the use of scented laundry detergents and fabric softeners, which can alter the vaginal pH.
