The Techiman North Constituency has successfully organized a National Sanitation Day exercise to improve cleanliness and strengthen community bonds across the district.
The cleanup activity was held on Friday, August 31, 2025, and saw active participation from all sectors of the community including traditional leaders, schoolchildren, traders, public officials, and security personnel. Although initially planned for the first Saturday of the month, the event was brought forward out of respect for the Techiman Traditional Council, which reserves that day for funeral observances.
Notable dignitaries who took part in the exercise included the Member of Parliament for Techiman North and Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare; the District Chief Executive, Hon. Adom Kwabena Johnson; the District NADMO Coordinator, Mr. Adamu Mohammed; departmental heads from the District Assembly; local chiefs; and members of the general public.
In a media briefing after the cleanup, Hon. Ofosu-Adjare commended the community for their unity and sense of duty. She particularly praised the involvement of schoolchildren, many of whom arrived as early as 5:00 a.m., even though the exercise officially began at 6:00 a.m.
The minister explained that despite political differences, residents of Techiman North continue to work together for the common good.
“What makes me proud is that we remain united regardless of our political affiliations. We’re all working together for the development of our community. In unity we stand. In Techiman North, we collaborate.
“Everything I’ve done as a leader has focused on bringing people together, not dividing them. That’s why you see everyone represented here today. Unity is a process and now, the results speak for themselves.” She said.
Hon. Elizabeth also encouraged residents to take responsibility for maintaining cleanliness daily, not only during scheduled sanitation exercises. “Gone are the days when people would litter and wait for ZoomLion to come and clean. Today, we all see ourselves as part of ZoomLion, we’re all doing our part. This will help improve our sanitation culture and waste management practices. A clean community is a healthy one, and a united community can achieve great things.”
The District Chief Executive, Hon. Adom Kwabena Johnson in an interview with the media explained that the change in date was necessary to avoid disrupting local customs. He applauded the massive turnout, calling it a testament to the district’s strong sense of unity.
“The first Saturday of each month is set aside for funerals by the Traditional Council. Out of respect, we decided to reschedule the sanitation day. We saw everyone involved, chiefs, Unit Committee members, students, traders. The security services also played a key role in ensuring order throughout the exercise.” He stated.
According to him, the Techiman North National Sanitation Day is expected to become a monthly tradition aimed at promoting environmental consciousness and enhancing communal cohesion.
“We are truly grateful to everyone who came out,” he added. “This is just the beginning—we plan to continue this every month.”
