: Manageress Of Ebenezer Cooperative Credit Union recounts humble beginnings ahead of 30th anniversary

The Manageress of the Ebenezer Cooperative Credit Union, Mrs. Mary Yeboah, has shared a heartfelt account of the Union’s humble beginnings and remarkable growth as the institution prepares to celebrate its 30th anniversary and Annual General Meeting on December 15, 2025.

In an exclusive interview with our reporter, Mrs. Yeboah explained that the Union started as a small susu association to support the financial growth of members of the Ebenezer Methodist Church.

She disclosed that the Union was officially launched in April 1995 after a series of financial seminars organized by the church leadership, with resource persons from the Abosomakotere Cooperative Credit Union.

“We started as a small susu association to help grow the finances of the church members of Ebenezer Methodist Church. In April 1995, the union was officially launched following a series of financial seminars organized by the church leadership, with staff from Abosomakotere Cooperative Credit Union serving as resource persons.”

She recounted that during their early operations, the church auditorium served as their first banking hall, and two church members; Mrs. Elizabeth and Mrs. Grace Owusu Amponsah were appointed as treasurer and cashier. They operated only on Sundays after church service.

According to her, the financial seminars helped members appreciate the value of buying shares and using them as seed capital, which played a crucial role in the Cooperative’s growth.

“When we began operations, we used the church auditorium as our banking hall. The church appointed two members, Mrs. Elizabeth and Mrs. Grace Owusu Amponsah, as treasurer and cashier, respectively, and they operated only on Sundays after church service.

“Thanks to the financial seminars, members understood the importance of buying shares and using them as seed capital for the Cooperative, which greatly helped our growth.”

Mrs. Mary Yeboah added that the church later allocated space in the old Methodist mission house, which became the Union’s first official office. She noted that Mr. Joseph Ameyaw was appointed as the first account officer, and through the grace of God, the Union grew steadily and eventually opened its services to the general public.

She further revealed that the Union later rented two offices at Sunyani Station, a move that attracted many new members, especially traders operating at the Techiman Market. She explained that this marked a major turning point in their expansion efforts and helped strengthen the Union’s membership base.

“Over time, the church provided us with a space in the old Methodist mission house, which became the first official office of Ebenezer Cooperative Credit Union. Mr. Joseph Ameyaw was appointed as the first account officer. By the grace of God, the union grew steadily and eventually decided to extend our services to the general public.

“The union later rented two office spaces at Sunyani Station, which allowed us to attract many new members, particularly traders who operate at the Techiman market.”

The upcoming 30th anniversary and Annual General Meeting is expected to highlight the Union’s achievements, challenges, and the vision that continues to guide its operations in the Bono East Region and beyond.
